The Lestrange family was “one of the greatest pureblood families in the world,” and the heirs to the family fit the description perfectly. With their mother being a witch, their father a wizard, a noble and pure bloodline and power – what more could be perfect in the wizarding world? Arrogance seemed to permeate the air in the Lestrange household as Rabastan was raised, and his life's path had already been set before he was born.
As a child – and up until Rodolphus left to go to Hogwarts two years before Rabastan did – it was unlikely that one would find Rabastan far from his brother's side. Like a wart Rodolphus couldn't get rid of, Rabastan wanted to do everything his brother did, wanted to be everywhere his brother was, and wanted to cause trouble anywhere that he could. He succeeded in this more often than not, though there were cases where his trouble-making nature almost got him deathly ill (stealing four entire trays of shrimp from an aristocratic party, as fun as it may seem, isn't the best idea for one allergic to them). It was when Rodolphus left to go to Hogwarts that Rabastan began searching for something else to occupy his time. For weeks he caused trouble, but eventually he grew tired of even that; finally, one night he sat waiting on supper, staring at the large grandfather clock that had always sat, ticking away the minutes of the day. He began to wonder how it worked, and when he was finally called to supper, he had torn the entire clock apart to play with the gears. This began a lifelong obsession with pulling things apart, and sometimes – but not always – putting them back together.
Hogwarts would be a wonderful place for Rabastan, and it would be the first place to truly open his eyes to the world of wizardry. The Sorting Hat spent no time sorting him into Slytherin, and anything less would have been an insult, as the entire family line had been Slytherin for as long as anyone cared to remember. He strove to be the best in class, wanting to show that not only was he intelligent and from a powerful family, but that being a pureblood made him more competent, more skilled, and more adept to learn even difficult spells with ease. Yet this view would be shattered over time, as Rabastan was mediocre at best with transfiguration and herbology, but showed himself to be adept at potions and charms. His true love, something he was delving deeper and deeper into, was the dark arts, and how they would allow him complete power over his enemies.
As all students were required to study the Dark Arts to better learn how to defend against them, Rabastan wondered how those same curses would effect a living, breathing object. His curiosity drove him to experiment on rats at first, but eventually he grew bored with them and looked for new subjects. Owls, when he could manage to whisk one away, and eventually other creatures that he could find on campus would all fall subject to Rabastan's morbid curiosity on how curses worked, yet he always grew bored with his test subjects. Sure, they were living and breathing subjects, but they weren't people. How would he be able to learn anything about the effects of curses on people if he couldn't actually test on people?
It was during his research on curses that his brother introduced him to Bellatrix Black, a woman he was not unfamiliar with but hadn't gotten to know during his time at Hogwarts. It was also at this time when he would learn of his father's allegiance to Voldemort, and how their family was expected to perform great things for the Dark Lord. Excited that he would be following the same path their father had, he could see nothing wrong with Voldemort's vision – a world run by pureblooded wizards. Who else should rule but those who were the most noble, the most powerful?
Rabastan's time at Hogwarts seemed to move by in a blink of an eye, and during that time he learned things that would cause great harm later down the road. His curiosity for how things worked drove him to learn about the forbidden curses, and brought him to experiment with them. He found great joy in Imperio, a curse that allowed him to play with the minds of others, to make them into his own little pawns for just a time. With this knowledge he pledged himself to darkness, and was branded with the dark mark, forever marking him as a servant to Voldemort. While he'd stand at his brother's wedding to Bellatrix not long after, the power of the Lestrange family would wane within ten years, when Rabastan's father would be killed by the Aurors.
Swearing vengeance, Rabastan left to avenge his father's murder when Voldemort fell. Never getting the closure he wanted, he returned to his brother's side and along with Bellatrix and Barty Crouch Jr. the foursome put a devious plan into motion. The fearsome foursome baited and kidnapped Frank and Alice Longbottom, two of the Ministry's Aurors, and tortured them for information about Voldemort. Rabastan would spend a good majority of this night playing with the heads of the two Aurors, but in the end couldn't get any information from either of them – so he turned them over to Bellatrix, and watched with glee as she drove them to insanity.
Yet this joyous night ended with his arrest, and along with the other three he was shipped to Azkaban, to never see the light of day again. The prison did little to help his psyche, and instead drove him completely over the edge; when he was freed in 1996, he'd return to Voldemort's side with his brother and Bellatrix in tow. When asked about how he could be so cheerful after being let out of such a dreadful prison, Rabastan would go off on whimsical tales that made no sense – it would only be later that Rodolphus would be heard saying that Rabastan had been driven insane during their imprisonment.
To keep away from the Ministry's eyes and to cause terror whenever he could, Rabastan decided to bite the bullet and sneak into the muggle world. This allowed him information two-fold; he could hear what was happening in the muggle world, and he could slip in and out of the wizarding world to learn what was going on there as well. Beside that, who was going to look for a murderous Death Eater in a tiny stage production of a no-name musical in the muggle world?
