LONG ANSWERS
Appearance: Rabastan Lestrange is a tall lanky man with dark hair and dark eyes. He's all smiles and cheer, with a goofy grin and a curious demeanor. He walks with a long stride, almost always with an air of confidence, though it seems like he's always heading somewhere even when he's idly pacing back and forth in deep thought. He has, since his release from Azkaban, preferred to wear more street-like muggle clothing to allow him to blend into the crowd, or suits to convey a feeling of power. Rabastan tends to keep himself neatly groomed, with a tightly trimmed goatee that is a far cry from the long, scraggly beard he had during his imprisonment in Azkaban.

Likes & Dislikes: Rabastan has an absolute love for anything sugary, which he didn't receive much of as a child. He'll always be the first to order dessert after supper, be the first to have a huge second helping of cake, and be the last to finish (mostly because he's on his fourth serving). He has come to be a bit of a theater buff since his release, having found himself hiding amongst the muggles and their boring plays – though secretly, and he'll never admit to this, he finds some of them to be an act of pure genius. He likes nothing more than to see how things work, ripping objects apart to see how their gears connect to make the machine run – but never truly bothering to put the object back together (oh, and how he loves to play with the mind, the greatest machine of all). He's truly not fond of house elves, even though he grew up with one – he believes that they're all sneaky, stealing things behind their owners backs, and possibly plotting the deaths of their masters. He's actually allergic to shellfish and blueberries, something that he learned as a child and still occasionally has nightmares about.

Personality: Rabastan could have been a genius wizard, could have saved countless lives and probably could have gone on to lead a brilliant career either doing something generally amazing with his skills, or gone on to teach at Hogwarts. Could have, because Rabastan Lestrange instead chose the other path, or perhaps had the other half chosen for him – he was raised to be an heir to the Lestrange name, fame, fortune and power, all of which had long since been corrupted by the darkest of magic.

As a child, and even later on in life, Rabastan wanted to learn nothing more than how things worked. How do watches work? How does blood truly flow? Does the mind succumb to suggestions? These were questions always racing through his mind, and sometimes he acted on them, ripping things apart and never quite placing them back together (at least, properly).

Aside from his morbid curiosity on how things tick, Rabastan was a troublemaker as a child, always tagging along at his elder brother's side and causing general havoc and chaos wherever they went. Yet when it came to studies, Rabastan was a bookworm through and through, wanting nothing more than to learn as much about magic as he could. He devoured any text he could get his hands on, spent nights working in his room on new spells and ones he'd only seen written on the walls in the bathrooms, sometimes to disastrous results. While he did poorly in transfiguration and herbology, he proved to be amazing at potions and charms – though he shined in the field of magic he should never have studied, the Dark Arts.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Imperio was his chosen forbidden curse, allowing him to futz in the minds of others. The older Rabastan became and the deeper into the dark arts he delved, the more twisted his mind became. The rather even-tempered child had grown into a man with a sadistic side, one who enjoyed to torture others just to see how they'd react, just to watch how their psyche would handle torment. He used these “skills” to torment the Longbottoms before his arrest and subsequent imprisonment in Azkaban, where surely he'd never escape.

Yet in a twist of fate, he did escape, and was changed by Azkaban. He exited Azkaban all smiles and laughs, as if the entire imprisonment had been one big joke, an amazing pleasure cruise. Yet his time in the prison had broken his psyche, had actually driven him insane – more manic than ever, Rabastan would suffer from bouts of absolute bloodlust, wanting nothing other than to hurt or kill people just because. There was little warning to these episodes, at first they were few and far between – it seemed later that it would be the appearance of those who fought against Voldemort would begin spurring them.

Relationships:

Rodolphus Lestrange – Elder brother, best friend. Rabastan is overly close and protective of his brother.

Bellatrix Lestrange – Sister-in-law. He's extremely protective of her as well, though he tends to overlook her overzealous love of Voldemort as pure devotion.

Voldemort – Rabastan is completely loyal to Voldemort, acting as the Dark Lord's weapon whenever ordered.

Severus Snape – Rabastan is weary about Snape. Like Bellatrix, he feels that Snape is playing the field to his own advantage somehow, but can't quite finger what it is. If anything, he's more likely to poke at Snape and make snide little comments, all while keeping a sharp eye on the man.

Other Death Eaters – Brothers in arms.

Background:

The Lestrange family was “one of the greatest pureblood families in the world,” and the heirs to the family fit the description perfectly. With their mother being a witch, their father a wizard, a noble and pure bloodline and power – what more could be perfect in the wizarding world? Arrogance seemed to permeate the air in the Lestrange household as Rabastan was raised, and his life's path had already been set before he was born.

As a child – and up until Rodolphus left to go to Hogwarts two years before Rabastan did – it was unlikely that one would find Rabastan far from his brother's side. Like a wart Rodolphus couldn't get rid of, Rabastan wanted to do everything his brother did, wanted to be everywhere his brother was, and wanted to cause trouble anywhere that he could. He succeeded in this more often than not, though there were cases where his trouble-making nature almost got him deathly ill (stealing four entire trays of shrimp from an aristocratic party, as fun as it may seem, isn't the best idea for one allergic to them). It was when Rodolphus left to go to Hogwarts that Rabastan began searching for something else to occupy his time. For weeks he caused trouble, but eventually he grew tired of even that; finally, one night he sat waiting on supper, staring at the large grandfather clock that had always sat, ticking away the minutes of the day. He began to wonder how it worked, and when he was finally called to supper, he had torn the entire clock apart to play with the gears. This began a lifelong obsession with pulling things apart, and sometimes – but not always – putting them back together.

Hogwarts would be a wonderful place for Rabastan, and it would be the first place to truly open his eyes to the world of wizardry. The Sorting Hat spent no time sorting him into Slytherin, and anything less would have been an insult, as the entire family line had been Slytherin for as long as anyone cared to remember. He strove to be the best in class, wanting to show that not only was he intelligent and from a powerful family, but that being a pureblood made him more competent, more skilled, and more adept to learn even difficult spells with ease. Yet this view would be shattered over time, as Rabastan was mediocre at best with transfiguration and herbology, but showed himself to be adept at potions and charms. His true love, something he was delving deeper and deeper into, was the dark arts, and how they would allow him complete power over his enemies.

As all students were required to study the Dark Arts to better learn how to defend against them, Rabastan wondered how those same curses would effect a living, breathing object. His curiosity drove him to experiment on rats at first, but eventually he grew bored with them and looked for new subjects. Owls, when he could manage to whisk one away, and eventually other creatures that he could find on campus would all fall subject to Rabastan's morbid curiosity on how curses worked, yet he always grew bored with his test subjects. Sure, they were living and breathing subjects, but they weren't people. How would he be able to learn anything about the effects of curses on people if he couldn't actually test on people?

It was during his research on curses that his brother introduced him to Bellatrix Black, a woman he was not unfamiliar with but hadn't gotten to know during his time at Hogwarts. It was also at this time when he would learn of his father's allegiance to Voldemort, and how their family was expected to perform great things for the Dark Lord. Excited that he would be following the same path their father had, he could see nothing wrong with Voldemort's vision – a world run by pureblooded wizards. Who else should rule but those who were the most noble, the most powerful?

Rabastan's time at Hogwarts seemed to move by in a blink of an eye, and during that time he learned things that would cause great harm later down the road. His curiosity for how things worked drove him to learn about the forbidden curses, and brought him to experiment with them. He found great joy in Imperio, a curse that allowed him to play with the minds of others, to make them into his own little pawns for just a time. With this knowledge he pledged himself to darkness, and was branded with the dark mark, forever marking him as a servant to Voldemort. While he'd stand at his brother's wedding to Bellatrix not long after, the power of the Lestrange family would wane within ten years, when Rabastan's father would be killed by the Aurors.

Swearing vengeance, Rabastan left to avenge his father's murder when Voldemort fell. Never getting the closure he wanted, he returned to his brother's side and along with Bellatrix and Barty Crouch Jr. the foursome put a devious plan into motion. The fearsome foursome baited and kidnapped Frank and Alice Longbottom, two of the Ministry's Aurors, and tortured them for information about Voldemort. Rabastan would spend a good majority of this night playing with the heads of the two Aurors, but in the end couldn't get any information from either of them – so he turned them over to Bellatrix, and watched with glee as she drove them to insanity.

Yet this joyous night ended with his arrest, and along with the other three he was shipped to Azkaban, to never see the light of day again. The prison did little to help his psyche, and instead drove him completely over the edge; when he was freed in 1996, he'd return to Voldemort's side with his brother and Bellatrix in tow. When asked about how he could be so cheerful after being let out of such a dreadful prison, Rabastan would go off on whimsical tales that made no sense – it would only be later that Rodolphus would be heard saying that Rabastan had been driven insane during their imprisonment.

To keep away from the Ministry's eyes and to cause terror whenever he could, Rabastan decided to bite the bullet and sneak into the muggle world. This allowed him information two-fold; he could hear what was happening in the muggle world, and he could slip in and out of the wizarding world to learn what was going on there as well. Beside that, who was going to look for a murderous Death Eater in a tiny stage production of a no-name musical in the muggle world?

Plot Intentions: To cause absolute destruction and chaos. Actually, I'm open to anything!

Sample Journal Entry:

Muggles. I will never begin to understand what their obsession is with using such archaic means to get things done. Tonight I watched one spend over an hour scrubbing dishes in a tavern. Dishes.

I suppose it's not their fault that they're so blind to the world around them. It's not their fault that they have dirty mudblood children. It is our responsibility as the purebloods to find these disgraceful little pests and weed them out of our communities.

I will have to keep my eyes open to those around me for the time being.

I'm enjoying our little game of hide and seek, mates. Right now, you're not even close.

Sample Third Person RP:

The dark of night helped disguise the wizard as he moved through the shadows, wand in hand. The noise he made was drowned out by the light patter of rain that had been falling, and thunder in the distance did a good job in hiding any other noises. He crept to the window's edge and peered inside from beneath his dark hood, lightning flashing for a split-second to reveal the highlights of a mask that hid his features from those who might catch a glimpse.

… A glimpse they did catch. The family inside had caught his motions, and the lightning flash that had exposed him had sent them into a panic. By the next flash he was already gone, though now he was on the roof and creeping through the unlatched window in the master bedroom. There was still commotion downstairs, but it was seeming to calm down now, with the argument that there was no way there could have been someone in the window. No, no, that was crazy, it must have been a trick of the light.

That was exactly what he hoped to hear. They had been lulled into a sense of false security, and now he moved like a wraith down the upstairs hallway, stopping where the railing began and looked down over the living room.

Beneath the mask, Rabastan Lestrange grinned.
